காசி ஒரு கூடு..

 

காசிதான் பாரதியின் கண்களைத் திறந்தது. அந்த அக்கினிக் குஞ்சுக்கு ஆகாயத்தை அவாவும் சிறகுகளைத் தந்தது. 

 

எட்டையபுரத்துச் சங்கரன் கோயில் மண்டபத்தில், பொட்டுவைக்க வந்து திலகமிட்டனள் காளி. அந்தத் திலகத்தின் பின்னிருக்கும் ஞானக் கண்ணைத் திறந்து பார்க்க வைத்தனள் கங்கை.

 

ஒரு பதினாறு வயதுப் பையனாக வந்து சில ஆண்டுகள் காசியில் பாரதி வாழ்ந்த வீடு என்னைப் போன்றோர்க்கு ஓர் ஆலயத்திற்குச் செல்வது போல. அவன் சுவாசமே எங்களுக்குச் சந்நிதி.

ஜெயந்தி அவர்களுக்கு, அவருடைய வயதுக்குச் சம்பந்தமில்லாத இனிமையான மழலைக் குரல். அவர் பாரதியின் பாடல்களைப் பாடக் கேட்பது ஒரு பாப்பா மலர் அனுபவம்! 

 

பல இன்னல்களுக்கு இடையில், அந்த வீட்டை அவர் பொறுப்புடன் நிர்வகித்து வருகிறார்.

அந்த கங்கைக் கரையில், தாமிர பரணியின் குறுக்குத்துறை வண்டல் மினுமினுப்பை தரிசித்து நெகிழ்ந்தேன்.

Ettayapuram was the egg

 

Kasi was his nest

 

It was Kasi who opened his eyes to the outer world and gave his fiery spirit the wings to soar unto the skies. 

 

In the Siva temple at Ettayapuram when he was a small boy, Kaali applied a tilak on his broad forehead. Here, it was Ganga who enabled him to see the world through the eye of wisdom that lay behind that tilak.

 

He was about 16 years old when Rukmini Ammal his aunt brought him to Kasi to educate him. The house called Siva Matam, still stands there, on the bank of the Ganga, at Hanuman Ghar, quiet and serene. He lived there sometime between 1898 and 1904.

I could still smell his breath there.

I had the pleasure of sharing the dais with her. She has a voice that has nothing to do with her age. It is a delight to listen to her singing Bharathi’s songs in her childlike, sweet voice. She has been managing this home amidst difficulties. It was from here that Bharathi wrote to his wife Chellammal, in reply to her letter, imploring him to return home.

 

I could see the Tambrabharani winking through the Ganga..
